The dolls are a form of traditional Japanese Kokeshi Dolls. Each one of the Momiji Dolls has a small space in the base to hide a secret message on a blank piece of folded card which is included inside of the doll.

Momiji Dolls were originally inspired in 2005 by a kind of traditional folk art in Northern Japan that was called Kokeshi. The dolls were carved from spare pieces of wood that are about 3 inches long and also hand painted. They were usually made by farmers. The dolls would typically consist of a head and elongated torso which would represent the body and legs in its own single place.
