An engagement is an agreement/promise/betrothal of marriage between two people. It is also the length of time between the proposal and the actual marriage.
Engagement gifts have been used since Ancient Egypt and before. Gifts with personal symbols, family symbols or traditions or precious items weather in monetary value or personal have all been used as engagement gifts.
Rings used as an engagement gift is thought to have originated from Judaism as a golden nose ring. However many other cultures have included circles as a part of their wedding ceremonies such as the Ancient Egyptians who used wedding bands.

The first recorded giving of a diamond engagement ring is thought to have been in 1477 when Maximilian 1 the Holy Roman Emperor gave Mary of Burgundy a diamond engagement ring.
In modern times it is popular for friends and family to give an engaged couple engagement gifts and presents. Also the couple may give gifts to each other to show their love for each other not just as rings but many other items. These gifts may be anything from necklaces, chocolates, flowers and heart shaped bowls to decorative salad servers.
